PHARMACY

Accessible Medication Solutions

People's Community Health provides pharmacy services for convenient medication access to People’s Community Health Clinic’s patients at our Waterloo location. Staffed by knowledgeable professionals, our pharmacy ensures timely prescription fulfillment and offers guidance on medications.

Pharmacy staff and the leadership at Peoples Clinic are committed to keeping medication prices low and affordable. Our pharmacy offers many generic options along with discounted medications. We can help patients find solutions to better afford their medication costs including working within our Sliding Fee scale (link), providing co-pay assistance, and by working directly with local and county agencies. In addiiton, we honor Iowa SafeNetRx which can provide discounts for certain medications.

MED DROP Box: Dispose of your Medication Properly

Have you ever wondered what you should do with your old or unused medication? When medications are no longer needed it is important to dispose of them properly to avoid harm to others. By disposing of them in a safe manner, you can prevent the abuse of prescription drugs and protect Iowa's water supply.

THE BEST OPTION: Dispose of Medications in a Drop Box

Peoples Clinic has a MED DROP Box in our main lobby at the Waterloo location right next to the Pharmacy. You can dispose of unused, expired medications including prescription drugs, over the counter medications, patches, creams, and liquids that still have a leak-proof cap. Medications deposited in these boxes will be sorted and destroyed properly.

A GOOD OPTION: Toss it in the Trash

When it is not possible to take it to a drop box location, the U.S. food and Drug Administration recommends carefully discarding your medications as follows: (1) follow patient instructions; (2) remove medicines from original containers (do not crush tablets or capsules), mix with used coffee grounds, dirt, kitty litter or another undesirable substance, place the mixture in a sealed bag or can to avoid leakage; and (3) place in the trash for regular collection. Most importantly, before throwing out your empty pill bottle or other empty medication packaging, remember to scratch out all information on the prescription label to make it unreadable.

For safety to the public and the environment, the Iowa Pharmacy Association does not encourage flushing of medications down the toilet except as a last-resort option. A few medications have specific disposal instructions to prevent accidental ingestion by children, pets, or others. The labels of your medications should indicate when they cannot be disposed of through a medication take-back program and instead should be flushed down the sink or toilet when no longer needed. Please contact your local pharmacist to learn more.

**When in doubt about the proper disposal of medicines, ask one of our pharmacists.**
